Whilst children enjoy a long summer vacation through July and August, many assume school staff do too. But if you peek behind the school gates of any Dubai school, you'll find a busy team ensuring everything runs smoothly for the first day of term.

Facilities
The summer break is often the best time for schools to engage in expansion and improvement projects across the school. Check out the social media pages of your school and you’ll likely see what they’ve been getting up to. Many classes and corridors will get an annual coat of paint, and everything will get a deep clean. New schools will be under pressure to have everything ready for opening day. They’ll be putting the finishing touches on all learning areas, moving in furniture, and likely opening up to families for their first on-site tours.

Admissions and Marketing
Admissions teams usually work throughout the year, with rolling admissions for families moving into the UAE and preparing for the next intake. August is a particularly busy time for them as they ensure everything is in order for a new cohort of students. There is a host of information to be communicated to new joiners, questions to be answered, and documentation to be collected. Many schools still have spaces available and will be conducting tours and assessments for those families who have not yet confirmed a place.

HR
Right through August schools will be welcoming new staff to the school and Middle East. Teams will be heading to the airport at all hours to welcome teachers and their families and getting them settled into their accommodation. Each new staff member comes with a long list of documentation to collect and process from police checks, visas, insurance, payroll, and KHDA registration. Their goal is to ensure every classroom is staffed by talented, passionate professionals who are ready for day one.

IT, Finance, Transport
Plenty of other preparation goes into ensuring a smooth start to the year. Seemingly small tasks—printing ID cards, setting up email accounts or organising bus routes—quickly become major operations when multiplied across thousands of students. Your school will have a dedicated team tasked with ensuring every process is carefully thought through.

Summer Camps
Many schools will have summer camps operating on campus, often through a third-party provider. Sports camps are popular, but so are robotics, coding, languages and other interest-based activities. Summer camps are a great way for children to develop new skills and make new friends, whilst often serving an important childcare function.

Staff Induction
Academic staff usually return to the campus in waves. Senior Leaders come first; engaging in strategic planning for the year. Next, new teachers are welcomed with induction and training. A week before the start of term all teachers will be back on campus. They’ll be setting up their classes and preparing learning materials for the first weeks of school.

New Student Orientation
Schools in Dubai often reduce pressure on families and systems with a staggered start to the school year. Times dedicated specifically to new students allow children and their families to meet teachers and see their classrooms learning spaces before the big day. In early years students might start with shorter days, allowing them to ease gently into school routines. Returning students usually join last, eager to be reunited with old friends and to meet new teachers and classmates. Traffic is a significant consideration in staggered starts, as many parents like to bring their children in on the first day rather than using the bus or a quick drop and drive.
Did you know? Some Dubai employers offer flexible working hours on the first day of school, allowing parents to support their children while also helping to reduce peak-time traffic.
The lead up to the new school year can be an emotional time for everyone involved. It’s an exciting time, but parents can also find themselves feeling anxious, overwhelmed or sentimental. It helps to remember that everyone is working towards the same goal – ensuring that all children have the very best start to the school year. A little patience and flexibility go a long way.
